Fostering Excellence in the Practice, Research, and Teaching of Medicine
Incorporated in 1987, the Sonoma County Academic Foundation for Excellence in Medicine (SCAFEM) is a non-profit 501(C) (3) medical education foundation whose mission is the growth of quality medical care in Sonoma County. SCAFEM’s board of directors represents a cross-section of medical professionals as well as community representatives. Funding for SCAFEM comes from donations and grant administration. and is currently focused on support of the Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program.
SCAFEM has a long history of collaboration and support of the Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program, its affiliated Family Practice Clinics, and Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa, formerly Community Hospital. SCAFEM administers several restricted funds for various residency educational goals and currently administers grants from the State of California and others for residency education.
In the past, SCAFEM organized medical education conferences and trainings for the medical community at large, served as the North Coast Area AIDS Education and Training Center and published The Clinicians Handbook of Symptom Relief in Palliative Care, a medical protocols manual authored by local physician Gary Johanson, M.D.
